How did CHDK start? Who were the first developers? What was their role in those first steps? Do you have any information on who those people are, where they come from, or their professional background? I talked with the core team of developers to learn more about CHDK.

Professional control: RAW files, bracketing, manual control over exposure, zebra mode, live histogram, grids, etc.

In my opinion, a fantastic piece of software.A Q&A with the CHDK Developers Adding Features to a Camera: Hacker Meets Photographer IntroductionĬHDK is a free, open source software add-on that runs on Canon PowerShot cameras and expands their functionality. Only when the animal moves into focus does the the camera fire so your subject is in the centre of the frame and in focus.

Another great feature is Trap Focus which can be used as a form of motion detect. Motion detect works very well for wildlife. Used it extensively for still rather than video photography and had no issues whatsoever. I have installed Magic Lantern on 5 different Canon bodies. Whether you think that makes it dodgy or not, that's up to you. It's third party and backward engineered. The camera can do it all, Canon just couldn't be bothered to do it (or rather they want to sell you some ridiculously expensive gadget to do it). I definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to do any timelapse or long exposure photography that would normally require some kind of external controller. It's David's loss anyway, Magic Lantern is the best thing to have happened to my camera.

You do not want to experience my snark.ĭon't worry, I've got thicker skin than that.

I've looked at Magic Lantern but I'm just not comfortable installing third-party firmware. Couldn't you have replied something like this: But thanks for taking time to reply! :-)ĭavid, what a snarky reply! Robbersdog posted a friendly suggestion. I wouldn't care if it could make ice water in the desert, I wouldn't touch it. It's a dodgy third-party firmware that you install, not one that I install. It's effectively a custom firmware you install. Loads of really good stuff, it's made a huge difference to how I use my camera. Other stuff it can do, fully programmable bulb mode, timelapse, exposure ramping, automatic "expose to the right", increase gain on the rear LCD for night time photography and so on. It adds a LOT of features that are missing from Canon DSLRs, including motion detection.

It's effectively a custom firmware you install that runs the magic lantern software from your card when you turn the camera on. The magic word that I did not think of was “trap.” I appreciate your reply and I will look into everything that you mentioned. I just wanted to give you kudos on a really informative reply. To make MIOPS into a more general motion sensor requires using a phone's camera as the motion sensor (as explained in the user manual in Section 9.3.c The MIOPS can be triggered by lightning, sound, or by tripping a laser beam.

I think these are all better than my first thought which was to use a MIOPS sensor. However today I found an active website for TrailMaster.Ĭognisys makes camera traps and are recommended in the above video. The video discusses a variety of motion sensors but the "Update" indicates that two of the sensors (TrailMaster and PixelPawn) are no longer available. I thought this longer video was very complete. That link and video are by Camtraptions who make Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensors for DSLRs. Watch the short video in the link:ĭ/turn-dslr-camera-wildlife. But I had nothing else to do today and it sounded like an interesting topic so I did some searching. Originally posted at 11:08AM, 18 July 2020 PDTĭavid Illig edited this topic 25 months ago.
